Frequently Asked Questions – Inagene Diagnostics Inc.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use Inagene Personalized Insights™?

Inagene Personalized Insights™ is designed for anyone who is interested in understanding which drugs are likely to work best to treat their pain or mental health condition. Personalized Insights™ is also useful for people interested in knowing whether cannabis may be a good treatment option for them (please note, the evidence for cannabis recommendations are currently preliminary). Even for those who currently do not take any medication, pharmacogenetics testing may be helpful as a proactive measure by finding out which medications would work best for you based on your genetics.

How much is the kit?

The Precision Pain and Mental Health kit and the PrecisionRx kit are available for $299 each (plus applicable taxes). The PrecisionRx ULTRA package (Pain and Mental Health AND Precision Rx tests) is $399 (plus applicable taxes). Expedited shipping to Canada is free, you can also upgrade to express shipping for an additional fee.

Which test should I order?

The Personalized Insights™ Precision Pain & Mental Health test is ideal for patients who specifically want information regarding medications that are prescribed for pain and mental health. It is the best option for those who are ONLY interested in mental health and pain medication insights. The Personalized Insights™ PrecisionRx, however, provides insights for medications prescribed across a variety of conditions, covering >160 commonly used drugs for multiple therapeutic areas (anesthesia, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, immunology, infectious disease, neurology, oncology, respirology, and urology), as well as Pain & Mental Health (however, less medications are tested for in these two areas than those on the Precision Pain & Mental Health Report). Our third test option, the Personalized Insights™ PrecisionRx ULTRA, is the best deal, where you get BOTH PrecisionRx and Precision Pain & Mental Health at a discounted price, such that you will receive both tests with only one cheek swab test.

What diseases/conditions does the test cover?

Your Inagene Personalized Insights™ Report doesn’t provide disease risk information, but rather describes your unique predicted response to medications commonly used to treat a variety of pain and mental health conditions, and other conditions (eg. cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, etc.). Depending on which test you order, you may get a report on your predicted response to over 200 medications. The results are specific to individual medications (not health conditions), so the recommendations apply regardless of what type of pain, mental health, or other health conditions the drug is being used to treat.

I don't see the medication I take on the list of drugs you test for. Why is it not there?

Inagene Personalized Insights™ is the most comprehensive pharmacogenetic test available for pain, mental health, as well as some other health conditions (eg. cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, etc.), and includes more medications for these conditions than any other commercially available test. If a medication you are interested in is NOT included on our list of drugs tested it is because no genetic variants have been currently identified that are ready for clinical use.

(Note: research in pharmacogenetics is ongoing, and Inagene's reports are updated every 6-8 months to reflect important new gene-drug discoveries/information. As a result, new medications are typically added to our report each year.) Click Here for the full list of medications we test for currently.

When will my results be ready?

From the time your cheek swab arrives at Inagene's lab in Toronto, Ontario, it generally takes about 7-9 business days for your results to be ready to view on Inagene's secure online portal. We will send you notifications via email each step in the process (sample reached lab, being processed, results ready). You can check on the status of your test from your secure Inagene account.

How do I know if my sample has reached the lab?

The tracking code found on the return mailer provided with your kit can help you know where your kit is. Once your kit has been shipped off to the lab, you will be able to track the status of your cheek swab sample – from when it arrives at our lab to when your results are ready – all from your secure online Inagene account. You will also receive an email notification when your sample has begun processing at our lab. Please note all packages are shipped via Canada Post and delivery delays may occasionally occur.

What if I do not have access to a computer, can I still use the kit?

The Personalized Insights™ report is provided through a secure online portal which can be accessed from a computer or a mobile device.

When is the best time to do a PGx test?

A pharmacogenetics test can be done at any time, from infancy on. Typically, patients who are struggling with pain or mental conditions order one of our tests to determine which medication will work best for them based on their genetics. Additionally, patients who are currently being treated for a variety of other conditions (e.g. cardiovascular, oncology, gastroenterology) might decide to order a PGx test to determine if their current treatment plan is ineffective or contributing to adverse outcomes (side effects). However, you can decide to order a PGx even if you aren’t on any medications as a proactive measure. Your DNA does not change but the medications you take as you age do. Thus, in the future, if you are ever prescribed medication, you can share your report with your HCP to determine the best medication for you based on your genetic profile.

How is Inagene different from other genetic testing kits on the market?

Unlike other genetic tests, Inagene Personalized Insights™ is uniquely focused on providing the most comprehensive test to support optimal treatment of pain and mental health conditions, as well as many other conditions. Personalized Insights™ also includes evaluation of cannabis options (please note the evidence for cannabis recommendations is currently preliminary). Inagene also tests for more genes and variants than any other pharmacogenetics tests on the Canadian market. Our turnaround time is additionally faster than most. Inagene also uses its own lab to process all results and does not subcontract to other labs. The Inagene lab holds accreditation by CLIA, (which stands for the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments). CLIA's mandate is to ensure quality laboratory testing by ensuring pharmacogenetic labs meet quality control and accuracy standards, certifying that the results are accurate and the test does what it is designed to do.

The Personalized Insights™ report offers guidance on which drugs are likely to work best for you, and which you should avoid (based on increased risk of side effects or drug interactions), so you and your healthcare team can manage your health condition(s) as effectively and safely as possible. The reports are available on our secure portal so that you can easily share your reports with others.

Why is it important to share the results with my healthcare professional?

Your Personalized Insights™ report is not intended to take the place of professional medical advice. Sharing your report with your healthcare professional is important so you can receive the medications and treatments that will work best for you, according to your genetic profile. Your healthcare provider may use the information contained in your Personalized Insights™ report for future reference when considering new medications for you. For example, test results should be considered in the context of other clinical variables including age, diet, organ function, other medications prescribed, and compliance in taking medications, as well as the type, stage, severity of the specific disease being treated, and the disease’s comorbidity with other conditions.

How is my genetic data protected?

At Inagene, we believe that personalized medicine should never mean an invasion of privacy, and protecting the security of your personal data is of paramount importance. Inagene is committed to protecting your genetic data and will never share or sell your data to third parties. We operate in full compliance with Canadian Data Protection regulations, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), all Canadian Provincial Privacy Regulations, and no Inagene personnel can link your sample to your personal information. Comprehensive physical, electronic and procedural safeguards are in place to protect against unauthorized use, access, alteration, duplication, destruction, disclosure, loss or theft of your personal information. Additionally, Canadian legislation prevents employers, insurance companies or anyone else from asking you to disclose your genetic test results.

What is your privacy policy?

An important aspect of Inagene’s commitment to you is respect for your right to privacy; this entails keeping your genetic data and personal information in strict confidence. Our Privacy Notice outlines our responsibilities and your rights when it comes to the collection, use and disclosure of your personal information. Please visit our Privacy Notice Page to learn more.

Do I ever have to repeat the Inagene test?

Your genes are your genes for life - they do not change, which is why the Personalized Insights™ test only needs to be done once, and the insights you receive last a lifetime. Your online report is automatically updated every 6-8 months to reflect important new clinical data, and to add new medications where new gene-drug links have been identified. Also, after complying with minimum retention periods as required by law, your DNA sample is destroyed unless you specifically consent to having your sample securely stored by Inagene to provide you with future updates or possible new analyses. If you decide to have your sample destroyed, you will still receive updates to your online report based on genetic variants detected in your original sample, however, should you be interested in purchasing any new tests developed by Inagene in the future, a new sample will need to be submitted.

What does it mean if my sample is deemed unusable?

In rare cases, the initial sample you send to Inagene's lab may not have sufficient DNA for testing (or if the instructions for sample collection are not followed). Thus, there may be a need to repeat the test/sample collection so that your report can be generated. If this happens you will not be charged for the replacement test kit.

Where do the recommendations in the report come from?

The recommendations in Inagene’s report are taken directly from published pharmacogenetic recommendations (publicly available) from several well-recognized, government-funded governing bodies that have been established over the past two decades in the USA, Europe, and Asia. Research over the last three decades has generated an overwhelming amount of evidence that genetic variation plays a major role in how individuals respond to different drugs. These include the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Clinical Pharmacogenetics Implementation Consortium (CPIC), the Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base (PharmGKB), EMA (European Medicines Agency), Health Canada, and the Dutch Pharmacogenetics Working Group (DPWG). If you are interested in learning more about these recommendations, your report will have direct links to our sources where you can learn more about the validated science.

Can my genetic data from 23andMe and or be uploaded to generate an Inagene Personalized Insights™ report?

This is not something we currently offer since our genetic testing panel is much more comprehensive than most standard DNA tests, and tests for specific genetic variants that impact individual responses to medications, some of which companies like 23andMe and do not include in their test panels.

Can my results apply to my children or other family members?

Your PGx personalized insights are unique to YOU alone, although genetic variants are inherited, there is no guarantee that immediate family members will share the same genetic variants as you. Everyone inherits one set of genetic instructions (allele) from their mother and one from their father, and the combination of those instructions determine how a gene functions. To ensure your results are appropriately personalized, family member’s results should not be used to make treatment decisions for other family members. If your test results indicate that you are a ‘red’ for a medication that a close relative is also taking, you may decide to share your results with that family member due to potential familial implications of PGx test results, to encourage them to have themselves tested as well.
