How is Inagene different from other genetic testing kits on the market?
Unlike other genetic tests, Inagene Personalized Insights™ is uniquely focused on providing the most comprehensive test to support optimal treatment of pain and mental health conditions, as well as many other conditions. Personalized Insights™ also includes evaluation of cannabis options (please note the evidence for cannabis recommendations is currently preliminary). Inagene also tests for more genes and variants than any other pharmacogenetics tests on the Canadian market. Our turn around time is additionally faster than most. Inagene also uses its own lab to process all results and does not subcontract to other labs which holds accreditation by CLIA, (which stands for the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments). CLIA's mandate is to ensure quality laboratory testing by ensuring pharmacogenetic labs meet quality control and accuracy standards that certify the results are accurate and the test does what if is designed to do.
What can Inagene Personalized Insights™ tell me and my healthcare team about my treatment strategy?
The Personalized Insights™ report offers guidance on which drugs are likely to work best for you, and which you should avoid (based on increased risk of side
effects or drug interactions), so you and your healthcare team can manage your pain or mental health condition(s) as effectively and safely as possible. The reports are available on our secure portal so that you can easily share your reports with others.
Why is it important to share the results with my healthcare professional?
Your Personalized Insights™ report is not intended to take the place of professional medical advice. Sharing your report with your healthcare professional is
important so you can receive the medications and treatments that will work best for you, according to your genetic profile. Your healthcare professional may
use the information contained in your Personalized Insights™ report for future reference when considering new medications for you. For example, test results
should be considered in the context of other clinical variables including age, diet, organ function, other medications prescribed, and compliance in taking medications, as well as the type, stage, and severity of the specific disease being treated, and the disease’s comorbidity with other conditions.
**Note that this information is for general education and should not be used to make treatment decisions without first speaking to your health care providers

emails to your safe senders list to ensure you receive your email updates. You can also check the status of your report on the patient portal at https://patients.inagene.com/login
Do I ever have to repeat the Inagene test?
Your genes are your genes for life - they do not change, which is why the Personalized Insights™ test only needs to be done once, and the insights you receive last a lifetime. Your online report is automatically updated every 6 - 8 months to reflect important new clinical data and, to add new medications where new gene-drug links have been identified. Also, after complying with minimum retention periods as required by law, your DNA sample is destroyed unless you specifically consent to having your sample securely stored by Inagene™ to provide you with future updates or possible new analyses. If you decide to have your sample destroyed, you will still receive updates to your online report based on genetic variants detected in your original sample, however should you be interested in purchasing any new tests developed by Inagene in the future, a new sample will need to be submitted.
What does it mean if my sample is deemed unusable?
In rare cases, the initial sample you send to Inagene's lab may not have sufficient DNA for testing (or if the instructions for sample collection are not followed). Thus, there may be a need to repeat the test/sample collection so that your report can be generated. If this happens you will not be charged for the replacement test kit.
What diseases/conditions does the test cover?
Your Inagene Personalized Insights™ Report doesn’t provide disease risk information but depending on which test you take, you could have response to over 200 medications commonly used to treat a variety of pain, mental health conditions and other conditions (cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, etc.). The results are specific to individual medications (not health conditions), so the recommendations apply regardless of what type of pain, mental health or other health condition condition the drug is being used to treat.
Do any of your tests include cannabis?
Yes, our Pain and Mental Health test (which is also included in the Ultra test package) does include cannabis insights. These insights reveal if you carry any genetic variants that may be useful in determining your response to different CBD to THC ratios, the possibility of increased side effects from cannabinoids, or whether you might have genetic variants possibly associated with an increased risk of cannabis use disorder. Please note that research linking gene-cannabis interactions is considered preliminary at this time. Details in the report may change as the research field evolves and new data is collected. If you still have any questions on this subject, feel free to contact us at email@example.com
I don't see the medication I take on the list of drugs you test for. Why is it not there?
Inagene Personalized Insights™ is the most comprehensive pharmacogenetic test available
for pain, mental health as well as some other health conditions (eg. cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, etc.) and includes more medications for t these conditions than any other commercially available test. If a medication you are interested in is NOT included on our list of drugs tested it is because no genetic variants have been currently identified that are ready for clinical use. (Note: research in pharmacogenetics is ongoing, and Inagene's reports are updated every 6 - 8 months to reflect important new gene-drug discoveries/information. As a result, new medications are typically added to our report each year.) Click Here for the full list of medications we test for currently.
Where do the recommendations in the report come from?
The recommendations in Inagene’s report are taken directly from published pharmacogenetic recommendations (publicly available) from several well-recognized, government – funded governing bodies that have been established over the past two decades in the USA, Europe, and Asia. Research over the last three decades have generated an overwhelming amount of evidence that genetic variation plays a major role in how individuals respond to different drugs. These include the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Clinical Pharmacogenetics implementation Consortium (CPIC), The Pharmacogenomics Knowledge Base(PharmGKB), EMA (European Medicines Agency), Health Canada, and the Dutch Pharmacogenetics Working Group (DPWG). If you are interested in learning more about these recommendations, your report will have direct links to our sources where you can learn more about the validated science.
Do I need a Doctors referral to purchase a kit?
You do not need a Doctors referral to purchase our kit however, sharing your report with your healthcare professional is important so you can receive the
medication and treatments that will work best for you, according to your genetic profile. Your healthcare professional may use the information contained in your Personalized Insights ™ report for future reference when considering new medications for you.
Why is the same drug green on the PrecisionRx test and yellow on the Personalized Insights test?
The PrecisionRx test is an all-encompassing test that enables precision medicine and personalized prescribing across a broad spectrum of health needs, while the Personalized Insights test is tailored to individuals suffering from pain or mental health disorders. By focusing only on pain and mental health, the Personalized Insights test is able to be the most comprehensive test available for these conditions. Some medications are impacted by more than one gene, and some of those genes may not be present on the PrecisionRx test. This is because some genes have more clinically important impacts than others, and only the most important genes are on the PrecisionRx test because of its broad-spectrum nature. With any medication, it is important to read the recommendation because being a yellow/caution does not necessarily mean that this drug isn’t the best drug for you. It is important to discuss your results with your health care provider before making any changes to your medications.
Can my results apply to my children or other family members?
Your PGx personalized insights are unique to YOU alone, although genetic variants are inherited, there is no guarantee that immediate family members will share the same genetic variants as you. Everyone inherits one set of genetic instructions (allele) from their mother and one from their father, and the Combination of those instructions determine how a gene functions. To ensure your results are appropriately personalized, family member’s results should not be used to make treatment decisions for other family members. If your test results indicate that you are a ‘red’ for a medication that a close relative is also taking, you may decide to share your results with that family member due to potential familial implications of PGx test results, to encourage them to have themselves tested as well.
When is the best time to do a PGx test?
A pharmacogenetics test can be done at any time, from infancy on. Typically, patients who are struggling with pain or mental health order one of our tests to determine which medication will work best for them based on their genetics. Additionally, patients who are currently being treated for a variety of other conditions (eg cardiovascular, oncology, gastroenterology) might decide to order a PGx test to determine if their current treatment plan is ineffective or contributing to adverse outcomes (side effects). However, you can decide to order a PGx even if you aren’t on any medications as a proactive measure. Your DNA does not change but the medications you take as you age do. Thus, in the future, if you are ever prescribed medication, you can share your report with your HCP to determine the best medication for you based on your genetic profile.
I’m currently not taking any medication, should I still consider a PGx test?
Yes, ideally we should all do a PGx before we are ever prescribed any medication. Understanding which medications will work best for us based on our genetics can avoid potential adverse outcomes and drug trial and error.
Which test should I order?
The Personalized Insights™ Precision Pain & Mental Health test is ideal for patients who specifically want information regarding medications that
are prescribed for pain and mental health. It is the best option for those who are ONLY interested in mental health and pain medication insights. The
Personalized Insights PrecisionRx however, provides insights for medications prescribed across a variety of conditions, covering >160 commonly used drugs
for multiple therapeutic areas (Anesthesia, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Immunology, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Oncology, Respirology, and Urology - As well as Pain & Mental Health (less medications are tested for in these two areas than found on the Precision Pain & Mental Health Report). Can my genetic data from 23 and Me and or Ancestry.com be uploaded to generate an Inagene Personalized Insights ™ report?
This is not something we currently offer since our genetic testing panel is much more comprehensive than most standard DNA tests, and tests for specific genetic variants that impact individual responses to medications, some of which companies like 23andMe and Ancestry.com do not include in their test panels.
