Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
Where do the recommendations in the report come from?
The recommendations in Inagene's report are sourced from several established expert pharmacogenetics consortia, and regulatory bodies like the FDA. These recommendations are then paired with insights gleaned from your DNA profile to provide you with personalized insights that can help you feel better, sooner.
Which conditions does the test cover?
Your Inagene report provides information related to your predicted response to medications used in a variety of therapeutic areas. Our tests cover mental health (depression, anxiety PTSD, OCD and more), cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, oncology, postpartum, pregnancy, menopause and more. Applicability of your results will depend on your specific condition(s) and circumstances. Only your health care provider can determine if and how results can be applied to your treatment plan. How will my Inagene report help me get better healthcare?
Your personalized report will allow you and your health care team to manage your health concerns more effectively and safely. By analyzing your DNA, we can predict how you will respond to up to 196 commonly used medications. Your Inagene report offers personalized recommendations on which medications could work better for you, which medications may need to be prescribed using a modified approach, and when alternative medications should be considered. The recommendations in your report will help you reduce side effects, avoid trial and error and find a more effective medication faster.
When will my results be ready?
Once we receive your cheek swab at our Toronto lab, it generally takes 7-10 business days for your results to be ready to view on your Inagene account. You will receive email notifications when the sample is being processed and when your results are ready. You can also check the status of your test from your secure Inagene account. Please be sure to register your kit code and add @inagene.com to your email safe senders list so you don't miss these updates.

Will my test reveal any information about disease risk?
No, our test will not reveal any information as it relates to your genetics and disease risk. Rest assured, the information on your test will only provide personalized medication recommendations to help you and your doctor find more effective treatments.
Is this test covered by insurance?
Although most provincial health insurance plans are not yet covering pharmacogenetics tests, each province/territory varies, so check with your provincial health insurance to see if you are eligible for coverage. If you have additional employee insurance, it may be covered through a healthcare spending account. Please check with your provider.
Why isn't my medication on your test?
Not all medications have genetic interactions. At Inagene, we only include medications with strong, evidence-backed research that shows a genetic impact on your report. Other companies may have more medications listed, but it's likely because they are using data that doesn’t have adequate research supporting it. Pharmacogenetics is always advancing, and the Inagene Advantage Membership is the best way to keep up to date with the latest research. As a member, your report will be updated continuously with newly added medications and more precise recommendations tailored to your genes as the science advances.
Privacy
How is my privacy protected?
At Inagene, we believe that personalized medicine should never mean an invasion of privacy, and protecting the security of your personal data is of paramount importance. Inagene is committed to protecting your genetic data and will never share or sell your data to third parties.
We operate in full compliance with Canadian Data Protection regulations, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and all Canadian Provincial Privacy Regulations.
Comprehensive physical, electronic and procedural safeguards are in place to protect against unauthorized use, access, alteration, duplication, destruction, disclosure, loss or theft of your personal information. Additionally, Canadian and US legislation prevents employers, insurance companies or anyone else from asking you to disclose your genetic test results.
All genotyping and reporting are conducted in-house, with data securely stored in Canada to ensure patient privacy and compliance with stringent security standards. We take security and privacy seriously—it's not just a one-time project, but a core part of how we operate.
All DNA samples are safely destroyed after analysis is complete.
Can my test results impact my health insurance?
No, insurance companies cannot access your data from us. Additionally, genetic non-discrimination laws in both Canada and the U.S. make it illegal for insurers to request or use this information against you. Finally, our test focuses on pharmacogenetics—how you respond to medications—not disease risks.
Put simply, your test results are your information alone to use.

Why do I need this membership if I’ve already taken the test?
The Inagene Advantage membership ensures your report stays current with advancements in pharmacogenetics, including newly added medications and more precise recommendations tailored to your genes. Without the membership, your report will remain accurate based on the science available when it was created but won’t include future updates or discoveries that could enhance your treatment decisions.
As a member, how often is my report updated?
Your report will be updated quarterly to reflect advancements in pharmacogenetics. Updates are driven by new scientific discoveries and ongoing research in this rapidly evolving field. As new insights and medications influenced by genetics are identified, we ensure your report stays current to provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information.
How do I access my updated report?
You can access your updated report through your secure online portal. We’ll notify you via email each time your report is updated.
Is the membership tailored to my genes?
Yes. Your updates are personalized based on your genetic profile, ensuring the recommendations remain specific to you and your unique health journey.
Who can access the benefits of an Inagene Advantage Membership?
An active membership entitles one individual access to updates for their own personal results. This means if you have multiple results for multiple individuals within your account, your updates apply to one of your choice.
Can I get the membership if I haven’t taken an Inagene test yet?
The Inagene Advantage Membership is available with our Complete Health, Pain & Mental Health and Women's Health test. If you’ve already taken any of these the tests, you can sign up anytime. If not, bundle the test and membership to save.
How do I cancel my membership?
Your membership is billed annually and renews automatically. If you’d like to cancel, simply click here to manage your subscription.
Why can’t I purchase the membership with the Cardiovascular Health test?
Currently, the Inagene Advantage Membership is only available with the Complete Health, Pain & Mental Health and Women's Health test. If you’d like to upgrade your Cardiovascular Health test to Complete Health and sign up for the membership, please contact us at customerservice@inagene.com.
Why are updates no longer complimentary, and why was a membership introduced?
Pharmacogenetic research is evolving rapidly, with more gene-drug associations and new insights being discovered regularly. To better serve our customers and ensure they receive the most up-to-date information, we’ve introduced a membership that supports more frequent updates and includes a complimentary re-swab when we improve our test to analyze additional genes. While updates are no longer complimentary, this change allows us better support our customers and to provide the most accurate and reliable insights as the science continues to advance.
